Reigate, Hillview

The town of Reigate nestles at the base of the North Downs and its history can be traced back to the Battle of Hastings in 1088 when the victorious William the Conqueror awarded the land and the title – Earl of Surrey to one of his principal knights who built a castle and ordered that a town be developed below the walls to promote commerce and trade.

The new town replaced a nearby settlement known as Cherchefelle and it is believed the name Reigate came from Roe-deer gate as the town was near to the entrance of the castle’s deer park, which is now Priory Park, offering 200 acres of space and woodland.

Whilst the town has changed much over the centuries, including losing its castle, it has retained its character and charm. A large proportion of the existing town centre has been designated as a conservation area of special historic interest and the surrounding countryside has been elected as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Modern Reigate owes much to its proximity to London and the major transport corridors - the London to Brighton railway and the M25 and M23.
